In this pretty town, it is possible to stroll along the street characterized by arcades and full of shops, up to the Borgo Scacciaventi, an ancient commercial center of this city in medieval times, once called “Marcina”.
To visit the Abbey of SS. Trinity dating back to 1011 and its complex: the Chapel of SS. Cavensi Fathers, the Grotta di Sant’Alferio, the Ancient Chapels with altars from the 11th century, the Romanesque Cloister, the Ancient and New Chapter Hall, the Chapel of San Germano, the Catacombs, the Lombard Cemetery and the Museum.
Our trip to Cava de ‘Tirreni can only start from the center, where, walking through its irregular alleys and squares, we will first reach the Duomo and then the Castle of San Auditore. This last construction in particular, represented for centuries the crucial node on which the entire economy of Cava was based. Unfortunately almost destroyed during the Second World War, only a few remains of the structure remain today. Continuing the walk, you will then reach Borgo Scacciaventi, a neighborhood full of Baroque style buildings and characteristic for its 15th century arcades (the best place to find a wide range of local handicraft products) and the beautiful Abbey of the Holy Trinity. .
Considered one of the most important Benedictine monasteries in Europe of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the ancient Badia di Cava represents one of the driving forces of theological renewal and reform of the Church in Southern Italy. The structure houses a very precious archival and book nucleus (inheritance of the village of a past writing center), and it is possible to admire paintings, frescoes, mosaics, sarcophagi and sculptures of inestimable value. In fact, the high concentration and uniqueness of religious structures scattered throughout the territory are the great treasure of Cava dei Tirreni.
